I enjoy adapting art to needlepoint and I’m hoping to inspire you to take the first steps toward creating your own designs in needlepoint. Here, and on my blog, I share my experiences in adapting art to needlepoint.
What is adaptation? Adapting art to needlepoint is creating a new design based on elements of another form of art. For example, creating a needlepoint design based on elements of an antique quilt pattern. They don’t look exactly the same, but are similar.
Adapting art is not just looking at a motif and a border and starting to stitch. You need to study the motifs and their meanings, find out what materials were used to create them, and how these motifs and styles differ from one part of the country where they were made to another. Creating these new designs using just basketweave would make the task easier, but that is not what adapting is about for me.
When you have a complete understanding of the patterns and style, you will be able to take that knowledge and create original designs that contain components of the original art as well as your own twist on them.
If you want to take smaller steps, you can purchase one of my charted designs and try playing with colors or maybe change a stitch or two. You never know where it might lead you.
What’s New?
I’ve just completed a new tile called Happy Valley (shown below). Instructions are now available for the Happy Valley Tile. Click on Charted Designs in the Menu.
I’m working on a new Mosaic Rug right now. You can follow the progress of the rug on my blog using the link below.
